Thermal breezes. Island hops. Summer sailing.

The Spanish Mediterranean coast and the Balearics — variable conditions, busy anchorages, and the kind of sailing that rewards boat handling skill.

What this region develops in you.

Mediterranean summer sailing is not as easy as it looks. The winds are thermal — they build through the morning, peak in the afternoon, and die in the evening. That variation means constant trim adjustments, decisions about when to sail and when to anchor, and a different rhythm from passage-making in steadier winds

The anchorages, particularly in the Balearics in high season, are competitive. Arriving in a popular bay requires a plan — where to anchor, how to approach, what the holding is like. For coaching purposes, that pressure is useful.

The coastline is varied enough for interesting coastal navigation: headlands to round, channels to transit, harbours with different entry challenges. A week of Med sailing covers a lot of seamanship ground.

What you will sail

Coastal passages

Day sails along the Spanish coast and between the Balearic Islands. Typically 30–80 nm per leg, with enough variety in sea state and wind angle to cover a full range of sail handling situations.

Anchoring and marina work

The Med demands anchoring competence — particularly in the Balearics in summer where popular bays fill up. Mediterranean mooring (stern-to) is a standard skill to develop. Marina entries and departures under electric drives are part of most programmes.

Light-wind performance

Mediterranean summer includes a lot of light air — 8–12 knots is common in the mornings and evenings. This is where Code Zero and gennaker work happens, and where sail trim at low speeds becomes relevant.
